Western Market is an iconic Edwardian-style building featuring shops selling fabric, arts and crafts in Sheung Wan. It was identified by the Antiquities and Monuments Office as one of the Declared Monuments in 1990. 🏛

Completed in 1906, the four-storey building is in Queen Anne Revival style that was popular in the British Empire at the time. The brickwork on the four corner towers is "bandaged"🩹, giving a polychromatic effect. It was blue but was later painted red to suit the architectural style.

The building is actually a north block extension of a larger market complex that was in operation from the 19th century. The South Block was demolished during the construction of the MTR Sheung Wan Station 🚉, and was later rebuilt to be the Sheung Wan Civic Centre. The North Block was preserved and renovated by Land Development Corporation.

In 2003, the remaining market block was again refurbished 🖼, this time by the Urban Renewal Authority, and was expanded from 2 storeys to 4 storeys. To match the design with the market block, the neighbouring footbridge and the MTR vents (pic 4) were also redesigned and repainted. In particular, a clock tower🕰 and an arch with the market’s name were erected next to the vents to enhance the nostalgia of the market. However, both of them were later removed in 2016.

At present, it is the oldest surviving market building in Hong Kong. There is a large restaurant and banquet hall🥂 on the top floor, with fabric merchants and cafes on the first floor. The concept of adaptive reuse was adopted to bring life to this historic building.
