May be an image of skyscraper

Overlooking Connaught road Central, Jardine House, formerly known as Connaught Centre, is the first ever skyscraper to be constructed in Hong Kong. Standing at 178.5m tall, it overtook Pearl City Mansion in Causeway Bay and Kasumigaseki Building in Japan respectively to become the tallest building in both Hong Kong and Asia by its completion in 1972.

Not only were Jardine House’s iconic circular windows designed as such to reduce the required thickness of the structual frame, their circular shape bears resemblance to the traditional Chinese moon gates. Combining traditional Chinese architecture with Western engineering technology, Jardine House truly reflects Hong Kong's identity of the blend between East and West.

Just north of Jardine House is the General Post Office (GPO), the headquarters of Hongkong Post. Built in 1976 also on newly reclaimed land, it is actually the fourth generation in the long history of northward relocation of the GPO, with the third generation structure demolished to make way for the construction of the MTR Central station and also World-Wide House above ground.

Other than counters for post affairs, the GPO’s ground floor lobby also houses an exhibition that showcases the postal history and related items of Hong Kong. A wooden plaque preserved from the third GPO hangs overhead with the Bible excerpt “As cold waters to a thirsty soul, So is good news from a far country” inscribed. The current GPO is once again planned to be demolished and relocated to Kowloon Bay near the existing Central Mail Centre to make way for office buildings.
